Kenya confirms first human case of Rift Valley Fever in Marsabit

Patrick Amoth, the acting Director-General of Health, has confirmed a reported human case of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in Turbi, North Horr Sub-county, Marsabit County. This marks the first reported human case in the country in the latest , and ongoing investigations aim to identify additional cases and assess the extent of the outbreak, he said in a statement.

Furthermore, Amoth mentioned that the RVF is associated with the conclusion of the El Nino rains. "The conclusion of the rains has led to the surge in the mosquito population and increased transmission of vector-borne diseases," he added.

Additionally, Amoth urged the public to remain on high alert for the potential spread of RVF, noting that the county department of health should inform colleagues of the emerging alert. "Sensitize healthcare workers to RVF case definitions to increase the index of suspicion. Share case definitions with all health facilities and reporting units."

Amoth also urged public health workers to use protective equipment such as gloves and gowns when assisting with animal births, avoid handling and consumption of uninspected meat, and use insecticide-treated bed nets to prevent mosquito bites.

The DG has also asked Kenyans experiencing fever to report to the nearest health facility for assessment. "The Ministry of Health is working closely with the Directorate of Veterinary Services to monitor the situation and will update the public accordingly.
